What to Expect

Our London orthodontic clinic is designed to make your orthodontic experience the most efficient and enjoyable, with a range of state-of-the-art equipment imported from the USA. Our fully computerised practice ensures that every visit offers the maximum in treatment progress and personal media players at each chair provide entertainment during appointment time.

We offer a range of treatment options to suit individual needs, including regular and tooth-coloured fixed braces, and the increasingly popular ‘invisible’ braces. These include, removable Clearline® aligners and lingual braces which are fixed discretely behind the teeth.

Appointment Times
Appointments are usually 20 – 30 minutes long, although initially two or three longer appointments may be required to put on all the braces. Subsequent visits are generally at five – six week intervals. Most appointments are made at convenient times as far as possible, but parents should be aware that some appointments may need to be made during school hours.

The Initial Consultation
Our first appointment with you is mainly to meet and ascertain your goals and aspirations of orthodontic treatment. It usually includes a series of photographs of the teeth and face, which we will discuss together. Very often this visit will merge into a full diagnostic records appointment, depending on your needs.

Diagnostic Evaluation and Treatment Planning
This is carried out before treatment starts, to assess the type of orthodontic problem, the treatment procedures indicated and the fees involved. Two visits are generally required, the first to obtain the diagnostic records and the second for the discussion. Prior to the discussion visit, the diagnostic records will have been evaluated and an in-depth analysis made. A detailed explanation of the problems present will be given to you and your dentist prior to any treatment being agreed, so that you will be able to fully participate in the decision-making process. At each stage you will be advised in advance of all procedures and any potential fees involved.

You will have the opportunity at each appointment to discuss the progress of treatment, if you should so wish.

Length of Treatment

Treatment times range from just a few months to two years. On average, full treatment takes around 20 months, although less comprehensive treatment may be much quicker. A time estimate is based on experience of individuals with similar problems, normal growth and good co-operation.  We can only give a considered opinion about the length of the treatment, as all individuals are different.

Comfort and Convenience
At Bass Orthodontics, we use the latest braces and techniques, designed to reduce not only the time spent at each appointment, but also the overall length of the treatment. Our braces are specially designed for patient comfort and are amongst the smallest profile and subtle brackets available.

Indirect Bonding
The correct position of the brackets on each tooth is essential for successful treatment and in order to achieve this we use a technique known as “indirect bonding”. The brackets are firstly positioned on accurate models of the patients’ teeth, an index is made to hold the brackets securely and this is then transferred to the patients’ actual teeth. After setting with a special light activated adhesive, the index is removed, leaving the brackets firmly in place. This allows for very accurate placement of the brackets and, because most of the preparatory work is carried out in the laboratory, significantly reduces the length of the visit needed for this critical procedure.

Self-Ligating Braces

We use the most recently developed type of fixed braces called “self-ligating” braces. These use small integrated clips to hold the wires in place rather than the conventional elastic rings, which tend to discolour and trap food and plaque. Most significantly, elastic rings become stretched between visits, losing the precise control of tooth movement necessary for efficient treatment. Self-ligating braces not only move teeth much more quickly, but have the added benefit of being smaller and less noticeable.

‘Invisible’ Braces
We use many less-visible alternatives to traditional metal braces, such as ceramic tooth-coloured fixed braces, lingual braces (fixed to the back of your teeth), almost undetectable removable appliances and ‘invisible’ Clearline® aligners.
