Lingual Orthodontics

Lingual orthodontic braces are fixed behind the teeth (sometimes called ‘behind the teeth orthodontics’), where they are completely invisible.

This allows us to straighten the teeth using fixed orthodontics, which are typically faster than removable orthodontics, without anyone else knowing.

When we use lingual orthodontics the brackets are custom-made to exactly fit your tooth. With conventional orthodontic braces (either ceramic or metal) the brackets are standardised, the advantage with having custom-made brackets is that they can be made much smaller and thinner which enables them to be far more comfortable when fixed behind your teeth.

We use the smallest, lowest profile tooth brackets at our London practice, maximising patient comfort and enabling individuals to eat and speak normally, almost immediately after the appliance has been fitted.

Advantages and disadvantages of 'behind the teeth orthodontics'.

Unless anyone looks inside your mouth the braces are totally invisible.

This is a great advantage as even treatments such as Invisalign can only be considered almost invisible. Lingual orthodontics which fit behind your teeth can be considered totally invisible from the outside.

  1. 'Behind the teeth braces' are not suitable for all patients, the way your teeth bite together is of extreme importance when you have braces behind your teeth, and not every patient is suitable for this treatment.
  2. The cost of orthodontics behind your teeth is generally higher than conventional fixed orthodontics. This is because the individual brackets which support the wire are custom-made to exactly fit your tooth, where as in conventional orthodontics the brackets are taken from a stock manufacturer.
  3. Not all cases are suitable for lingual orthodontics, it depends upon the amount of movement which is required in your teeth and only an assessment by our orthodontist in London will enable us to tell for sure if you are suitable for orthodontics behind your teeth.

What are lingual orthodontic brackets made from?

Most commonly the brackets which fit behind your teeth are made from gold. Gold is a material which is highly biocompatible meaning it is the material of choice for many dental procedures. When we use gold in your mouth it is one of the few metals which have no reaction at all to the chemicals in your saliva, this means that lingual orthodontics made from gold do not pick up stains, discolour or have any taste to them like some other metals can.
